Dimitar Berbatov’s agent has stated that Bayer Leverkusen are tracking the out-of-favour Manchester United striker, and have been in contact with the Premier League club regarding a transfer.
The Bulgarian attacker spent five seasons at the Bundesliga side before moving to Tottenham and England in 2006, and has fond memories of his time in Germany.
Despite grabbing a hat-trick against Wigan on Boxing Day, first team opportunities have been at a minimum and the player’s representative has confirmed Leverkusen’s interest.
“It’s more than a rumour; Leverkusen have it on their minds to get Berbatov,” Ivan Dobrinov told German newspaper Bild.
“There is contact, but nothing concrete yet. It all depends on United’s plans.
“The player has never forgotten Leverkusen, the club is still very dear to him. Furthermore, he has a good relationship with the leadership at Bayer,” the agent concluded.
When quizzed about the link Leverkusen CEO Wolfgang Holzhauser admitted that there had been contact, but feels a deal to bring Berbatov back to Germany is a long way off.
“I would even say that the contact is friendly.
“But there is certainly nothing concrete at the moment. I also read that Manchester United would like to extend his contract,” he stated.
