As reported by The Mirror, Manchester United have opened contract talks with Marouane Fellaini about extending his deal at Old Trafford.
What’s the story?
Fellaini’s contract at the Red Devils expires at the end of this season. Reported by The Daily Mail to be on eye-watering wages of £120,000-a-week, it appears as if manager Jose Mourinho is happy enough to keep him around beyond 2018.
That’s according to The Mirror, who say the club have been urged to open talks with the midfielder by the Portuguese.
However, with the Belgian about to turn 30, the paper also say the only deal on the table could be a one-year extension due to club policy.
Should he be kept?
There’s no doubting that Fellaini has had mixed fortunes at Old Trafford since joining from Everton in 2013. At times he’s been harshly criticised by the Red Devils support for perceived poor performances and lack of passion in the heart of the United midfield.
However, under Jose Mourinho he has emerged as a key and reliable talent, with Mourinho often having no hesitation of starting him in massive matches. His form has definitely improved and fans are even starting to enjoy seeing his name in the starting line-up.
His goal and performance in the UEFA Champions League last week highlights he still has a big part to play at Old Trafford if he continues his current progress under Mourinho and worth any new contract.
