Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy made a big error as the Under-23s beat Newcastle United 6-2 at St Mary’s on Monday night, and Saints fans were not impressed.
The stopper would have known that he had a big opportunity to impress Mauricio Pellegrino and stake his claim for a regular starting spot in the first team following another bad day at the office for Fraser Forster against the Magpies on Sunday, and while the south coast outfit recorded a comfortable victory the 27-year-old had a moment to forget.
With Radhi Jaidi’s side leading 3-1, McCarthy attempted a Cruyff turn with Jamie Sterry racing to close him down, but rather than pulling it off he lost the ball and the Newcastle youngster tapped the ball into an empty net.
Southampton supporters were quick to have their say on the keeper’s performance via social media, and while some described him as having an “absolute stinker”, others said the under-fire “Forster will not improve unless he has decent competition behind him”.
